Fun Back to School Snacks That Make Kids Bug Out

Hallowe'en Candy Bowl

We find bugs in all sorts of places during pest control treatments, but one place you don’t usually see insects is in a lunch box. That is, unless you’ve packed a few tasty, bug-inspired treats to surprise your kids. We adults may hate bugs in any form, but lots of kids can’t resist snacks that turn what’s typically gross into something they want to eat.

Here’s a look at our favorite school snacks that draw inspiration from the bug population.

Ants on a Log

This is a clever way to get kids to eat a super healthy treat. Ants on a Log consists of a celery stick cut in half, with peanut butter smeared through the center and a row of raisins that double as delicious ants.

Ants in the Sand

This ant-inspired treat is really easy to make and fun to eat. Put a few graham crackers in a plastic bag and then crush them up. Open the bag, add raisins for ants and you’re done.

Gummy Worms

Kids have been eating this classic sweet treat since 1981. That’s the year Trolli, a U.S. candy maker, created a creepy crawly spin-off of the gummy bear that originated in Germany.

Lightening Bugs Gummy Candy

This treat from China takes gummy worms one step further. Each package of these gummy grubs comes with a pair of LED tongs that light up when you pick up a piece of candy.

Dirt in a Cup

Another way to use gummy worms is by creating dirt in a cup dessert. All you need is a cup of chocolate pudding, chocolate cookie crumbs to create a layer on top and a few gummy worms to stick into the “dirt.”

Grape Caterpillars

This simple snack is healthy and entertaining whether you eat it yourself or share with a friend. To create your caterpillar, get some green grapes and a few short wooden skewers. Skewer the grapes so they cover the stick. Next, take a tube of white chocolate frosting and a tube milk chocolate frosting to create a set of eyes at one end.

Hard Boiled Bugs

If your kids like hard-boiled eggs, they’ll love this quick, creative snack. Cut a hard-boiled egg horizontally into round slices making sure to cut one end off to use as the face. Lay the pieces flat and line the circles up in a row so that they overlap slightly in the shape of a caterpillar. Add two chocolate dabs to the end piece for eyes, and you’ve got yourself a protein-filled, eggscellent insect snack.

Fossil Cookies

Martha Stewart’s team came up with this clever idea. The cookies blend child-like wonder of fossils with insects for a totally unique dessert. Whip up a batch of sugar cookies like normal, but before putting them in the oven press plastic bug toys into the top to create a fossilized imprint.
