Scariest Bugs in The World!

Creeping in the attic, crawling around in the basement and hiding in the walls could be something more scary than anything you’ll ever see in a monster movie. Insects are some of the strangest looking creatures on the planet, but the bugs below are in a class all of their own. If you want to get spooked before Halloween these insects will do it!

Scorpion Flies

Is it a scorpion or a fly? This insect is found all over the world, but it looks like it was created in a lab. They are predatory insects with large fly eyes that take up almost the entire head, a long beak-like mouth and the males have a scorpion tail with a stinger at the end. What’s even scarier is that there are 550 species of this insect. At least they don’t bother humans and stay outdoors.

Titan Beetle

Few bugs can actually harm a human, and the Titan beetle is one of them. This super-sized insect has formidable looking pinchers that can slice a person’s skin open. Luckily, Titan beetles are found way down in South America and don’t venture far.

Hickory Horned Devil

Right here in North America there’s a bug that looks like nothing from this world. Hickory horned devils are caterpillar creatures with orange spikes protruding out of their heads. Across the rest of the body there are tiny black spikes ominously jutting out. Even stranger is the fact that yellow-bodied hickory horned devils disguise themselves as bird droppings during the day.

Antlions

There are two reasons the antlion earns its name. The first is the furry look of the bug’s tan body. The second is their tendency to eat ants during the larvae stage. If your yard is plagued by ants, it might be enough to get you to forget how freaky antlions look.

Goliath Beetles

If sheer size is the freak out factor, then you don’t want to be anywhere near a Goliath beetle. They’re among the largest bugs on the planet. The adults can get so big they entirely fill a person’s hand. Although they are natives of Africa, people from various countries keep Goliath beetles as pets. To give you an idea of their size keep this in mind – their diet in captivity is cat food.

Elephant Beetles

Another oversized beetle that’s shocking to look at is the elephant beetle. They truly do look like they have an elephant head. The males have a long horn on their head that looks like a trunk and an outer shell that flares out to look like ears. Underneath are huge wings that resemble something you’d see on a bat.

Thorn Bugs

When a thorn bug is sitting still they appear to be a sizeable, vibrantly colored thorn. But as soon as they start moving it’s apparent they’re something much stranger. Their large red eyes look as sinister as the spike sticking out of the back. Thorn bugs can be found in southern Florida as well as other countries around the world.

Brahmin Moth Caterpillar

This bug looks like something created by Tim Burton. Spiky, curly black antenna and a skeleton-like body make the Brahmin moth caterpillar a truly terrifying thing to look at. They’re beautiful once they turn into butterflies, but boy do they have an awkward adolescent phase.
