When it comes to keeping pests away, prevention is key. By avoiding certain habits and making a few changes around your home, you can significantly reduce the chances of attracting pests. Keep reading for some of the common mistakes people make that unknowingly attract pests.

#1: Food Storage

Leaving food out in the open or failing to store it properly can attract pests like flies, ants, and rodents. Make sure that all of your food items are tightly sealed in containers and stored in more secure places, like your pantry or refrigerator.

#2: Garbage

An overflowing or uncovered trash bin is like an all-you-can-eat buffet for pests! Make sure you’re disposing of your trash regularly in sealed containers, and make sure the area around your trash cans is clean. Remember that pests are small! Even the smallest spill or a few crumbs can attract unwanted house guests.

#3: Clutter

Piles of clutter provide excellent hiding spots for pests. Keep your living spaces clean and organized, as clutter attracts pests like cockroaches and rodents. Keeping your home well-ventilated with minimal clutter will go a long way in preventing pests.

#4: Standing Water

Stagnant water is the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Ensure to empty any containers that collect water, like birdbaths, gutters, or toys. Proper drainage on your property will help prevent puddles from forming whenever it rains.

#5: Unkempt Gardens

Pests love overgrown plants and untrimmed shrubs! They create the perfect hiding spots. Make sure you’re maintaining your garden this summer by keeping up with landscaping.

#6: Cracks and Gaps

Small cracks and gaps in your home provide easy entry points for pests. Take some time to look over your doors, windows, and foundation for any openings and seal them properly. This will help prevent pests like ants, spiders, and mice from finding their way inside.

#7: Untidy Pets

Even your furry friends can unintentionally attract pests! Be sure to clean your pet’s food and water bowls regularly, and don’t leave pet food out overnight. Store your pet’s food in tightly sealed containers and make sure their areas are clean. It’s also a good idea to clean their bedding every once in a while to prevent fleas and ticks from taking up residence there.

#8: Dirty Dishes

We get it—maintaining a spotless kitchen isn’t always easy, especially if you have kids or pets to worry about! If you can’t get to all the dishes, make sure you’re at least rinsing off the leftover food. Make sure you’re also wiping down countertops and cleaning up spills as soon as you can.
