Best Bugs! Fun Kid Insect Activities to Inform & Engage Your Child
Educational activities are the best activities for children of all ages. Not only can they be fun and exciting: They can also hold many valuable benefits. Teaching kids about insects, bugs, and other aspects of nature is a great way to inform your child about the world around them. Consider incorporating kid insect activities into your playtime curriculum so they can learn about all the critters around them!
Here is a list of activities that are guaranteed to make your child smile:
#1. Cheeseball Pollination Models
When explaining something like how one-third of the crops rely on bees and other pollinators to increase farmers’ crop yield, you’ll ask your child or student to reach into a pot of cheeseballs and grab an individually wrapped candy piece. Once they pick up the candy from the pot, point out how their hand is covered in cheese powder, also known as pollen.
Ask them, “In what way is this similar to the ways bees collect pollen?” Allow them to respond! Giving time for each child to participate in this activity not only sparks their creativity: It rewards them with a sweet treat in the end!
This is what some may call a “win-win!”
#2. Wanna Hear a Funny Joke?
Whether a child is class clown or straight-laced, everyone likes to tell a joke from time to time. Incorporate some funny insect jokes into your lesson plans. Here are three of our favorites at Vulcan Termite and Pest Control:
- What did the firefly say after the fashion show? Answer: You glow, girl!
- What did the apple say to the hungry caterpillar? Answer: Leaf me alone!
- How can bees fly in the rain? Answer: With their yellow jackets!
#3. Insect Kits
If you’re unable to play outside due to stormy or bad weather, bring nature inside! How? You can purchase various kinds of insect kits full of creepy critters, observation tools, nets, and more! Plus, it’s a great way to keep your child occupied on those stay-at-home days.
Wondering where to find a kit? Here are 10 insect kits we recommend.
#4. Math and Ladybugs?
Math and ladybugs? Those were two words you might never have imagined in the same sentence! If you’re teaching your kids how to count, they will love playing with flashcards that have their favorite critters on them. We love the brightly colored red-and-black visual of ladybugs—that’s why we suggest you print out a deck of cards with their image on them. A card with one ladybug for 1, two ladybugs for 2, and more! This is such a cheap and easy way to promote learning and fun all in one.
