Giving Thanks for People and Pests
At Vulcan Termite and Pest Control, Inc. we have a tremendous amount of pride and respect for our amazing team. Their hard work, genuine concern for customers and dedication to continual training has helped make our business one of the most trusted pest control companies in Alabama. Every year we show our thanks for another great year with a traditional Thanksgiving BBQ. It gives us a chance to gather around and enjoy each other’s company while celebrating all the accomplishments we earned together.
Believe it or not, another thing we give thanks for every year are pests. And not just because they keep us in business. Bugs might be bothersome at times, but they are an important part of the ecosystem and making our world go round.
Why We Are Thankful for Bugs
Bugs Feed the Food Chain – At any given moment there are 10 quintillion insects on the planet. While that may make you squirm, it makes many other living creatures hungry. Insects are a primary food source (and a good source of protein) for lots of animals, including other bugs and humans. Another way that insects help us eat is through pollination. Butterflies, bees, wasps and more pollinate plants that make up about 30% of our food supply.
They Help Create Fabrics – Silk is directly attributed to the silkworm, but insects also help in the production of plants like cotton that are used to make other fabrics. Today, humans have bred silkworms for so long that the insect is now dependent on us to live.
Insects Help Control the Insect Population – With that many insects, we’d need a lot more pest control technicians to keep bugs under control if the bugs themselves didn’t lend a helping hand. Some bugs like ladybugs eat other pests, while insects like the dung beetle control insect populations indirectly. Because they eat the dung of domesticated animals there are fewer places for flies to lay their eggs.
Cleaning Up Decay – Cockroaches are the bane of many homeowners’ existences. However, out in the wild they serve an important purpose. These creepy crawly insects break up rotting plant and animal matter in forests so that the decay doesn’t build up and choke out the plants.
They’re Expert Navigators – Unlike birds, migratory insects aren’t taught where to go by their parents. Insects like the Monarch butterfly instinctively know how to head south in the fall. Scientists are now beginning to study these insects to unlock the mysteries of intuitive navigation.
As you can see we’re all working together within the ecosystem. Bugs can be major pests, but they are also helpful in many ways. Without them the planet would be a very different place.
Happy Thanksgiving to all our team members, customers and helpful insects around the world!
