Tailgating Terrors: Tips to Deter Pests During Football Season

pests during football season

In most areas, the arrival of football season also means the arrival of fall! But, in Alabama, we know all too well that the summer heat will probably hang on for a little while longer. And that means the bugs will hang around, too! Don’t let pests ruin your tailgating fun—follow these tips to keep pests during football season at bay.

How to Prevent Pests During Football Season

One of the best things you can do to deter pests during football season is adequate preparation! This can look like a lot of things, but here are some standard, best-practice things you should do.

Prevent Pests from the Get-Go

You’d be surprised how little space pests need to make their way inside your home. Did you know that a mouse only needs a dime-sized hole? And bugs, of course, need even less than that. It’s a good idea to inspect your home periodically for holes, cracks, or gaps that pests could crawl through. Around the start of fall is also a good time to check and replace weather stripping!

If you’re pulling down your fall décor from the attic or a rarely-used closet, give it a good inspection to make sure no pests have been camping out in there. Also be aware of new things you’re bringing into your home: Things like pumpkins or firewood can carry bugs inside.

Don’t forget about your roof! A small fallen branch is enough to pierce a small hole in your roof, giving pests easy access—access you might not notice if you don’t inspect your roof every now and then.

Also, don’t forget about pest prevention technology! Invest in some good bug spray, a pest repellent candle, or an electronic pest repeller before the big game.

Be Mindful of Food

We actually have a lot in common with pests if you think about it. One of the biggest things we have in common? A love for food! If you’re serving food, especially outdoors, keep them in airtight containers or covered with plastic wrap when not being used.

Have plenty of trash cans—preferably with lids—available, and empty them as necessary! Throwing away food leftovers is a great way to prevent pests during football season, but the trash can draw them in as well.

Keep your counters, floors, and other surfaces free of crumbs and food residue! If there are any pests in your home (which there could be) they’ll be drawn to all the delicious food you’ve whipped up.
