How to Keep Bugs From Crashing Your Thanksgiving Dinner
You’ve got a house full of guests set to arrive for a Thanksgiving dinner, but there could be a few more visitors you weren’t expecting – pests. Give thanks for a bug-free holiday by following these tips.
Check All Food and Decorations Before Bringing Them Inside
You carry bugs right into your house more often than you realize. They latch onto clothes, bags, shoes – if it’s on you or in your hands bugs see it as a free ride inside.
When you’re out shopping for your Thanksgiving meal and decorations give everything a good look before you put it in your basket. Bugs, commonly referred to as pantry pests, can get into food especially bulk items, fruits and veggies. Any décor made of natural materials like wreaths could also be harboring pests. You may even want to consider treating décor with a bug spray before bringing it indoors.
Be a Clean Freak
Cleaning should be part of the Thanksgiving tradition. It’s not the most fun you’ll have on the holiday, but it will keep bugs out of the home so everyone can enjoy their dinner in peace. Clean up before and after everyone has come and gone so that dropped food is quickly picked up before bugs make it their own meal.
Properly Dispose of the Trash
Trash is a pest magnet. What is unsightly to us humans is like a delicious all-you-can-eat buffet for rodents, bugs and pests. Trash should be taken out in a timely manner rather than letting the can get stuffed until it overflows. Instead of keeping the trash can in your home keep it in the garage or just outside the back door. Once the meal and clean up is done for the day wheel the trash even further away from your home.
Prepare for Leftovers
After a big Thanksgiving meal there are sure to be scrumptious leftovers. Rather than letting them sit out for bugs to nosh on have containers ready and waiting to pack everything up as soon as the dinner is done. Purchase disposable take-home containers to send home with guests and you’ll have less leftovers attracting pests.
With a little bit of preparation beforehand and keeping on top of things throughout the dinner, the only guests at your table will be the ones you invited.
