Ants in My Kitchen? How to Find the Source & Eliminate the Colony

Why Do I Keep Finding Ants in My Kitchen?

Ants can squeeze through gaps around foundations, windows, and doors when they need a meal, moisture, or shelter. With both food residue around cooking areas and moisture from sinks and plumbing leaks, kitchens not only attract foraging ants, but they also give them more than one reason to linger.

The ants on your counter may be workers traveling between a food source and a nest. Removing only the visible insects can leave the colony untouched, which is why you’ll see the line of ants return in the same spot the next morning after you’ve smushed every ant you could see prior to going to bed the night before.

What to Do When You Find Ants in the Kitchen

If your first thought is, “I need to get rid of ants in my kitchen,” resist the urge to focus only on the ants in front of you. Instead, deal with both their route and whatever is attracting them:

1. Remove the buffet. Clean crumbs and grease, dry the sink, and repair drips or leaks.
2. Trace the traffic. Watch where ants enter and exit, then seal gaps along baseboards, windows, doors, and utility lines with caulk.
3. Use bait carefully if the problem is small. Place a labeled ant bait near the trail (but out of reach of children and pets), and the workers will do the rest. Unlike contact spray, treated bait doesn’t immediately kill the worker ants; they have to eat it, which is actually what makes it much more effective.

Worker ants don’t usually immediately eat the food they forage; they bring it back to the nest first to share with the colony, feed the queen, or nurse the brood. So when they bring bait they’ve mistaken for regular food into the nest, it delivers a surprise dose of deadly poison to whatever’s inside that ends up eating it. It’s an unassuming killer they welcome in, like the Trojan horse.

When to Call for Professional Ant Control

Ask yourself, “Do I really need pest control for ants in my kitchen?” You may be able to manage a small, occasional trail with cleaning, moisture control, sealing, and labeled bait.
