FAQs

What kind of diseases do mosquitoes carry?

Mosquitoes carry a number of diseases that can be harmful to people and their pets. These pesky bugs spread illness more than any other insect on the planet. Diseases that are known to be spread by mosquitoes include:

  • Zika Virus
  • West Nile Virus
  • Malaria
  • Dengue Fever
  • Yellow Fever
  • Eastern Equine Encephalitis
  • Western Equine Encephalitis
  • St. Louise Encephalitis
  • LaCrosse Encephalitis
  • Chikungunya Virus

Infected mosquitoes can also give a dog or cat heartworms. The parasite is transmitted through mosquito bites and can lead to death if it isn’t detected early.

How do you get rid of mosquitoes?

Getting rid of mosquitoes is two-fold. You have to treat the adult mosquitoes and also prevent eggs from hatching. An exterminator will first inspect the property to look for conditions that support mosquito breeding and determine the type of mosquitoes that are present. They will then note ways to correct problems so mosquitoes have fewer opportunities to lay eggs.

Next, the yard will be treated to create a barrier. The treatment is safe for children and animals but will repel mosquitoes. The insect repellent will need to be reapplied every 2-4 weeks. Finally, breeding areas are treated with larvicides or insect growth regulators to kill off mosquito eggs and larvae that will soon become biting adults.

What mosquito control products do you use?

Today, there are a number of mosquito control products available, some of which can only be used by a licensed exterminator. We only utilize mosquito pesticides that have proven to be effective, safe and are approved for use by the EPA. Mosquito management products fall into one of two categories: larvicides and adulticides. Common options include:

  • Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis
  • Bacillus sphaericus
  • Methoprene
  • Temephos
  • Malathion
  • Naled
  • Permethrin
  • Resmethrin
  • Sumithrin
  • Prallethrin
  • Etofenprox

What is mosquito fogging and what are the health risks?

Mosquito fogging is a widespread treatment that kills adult mosquitoes in order to control the population. Typically a small quantity of a synthetic pyrethroid is mixed with water then sprayed out of a fogging machine in the back of a truck. Usually mosquito fogging is performed in the late afternoon when mosquitoes are most active.

The diluted insecticide should be safe for humans and only affects mosquitoes, flies and gnats. However, health officials suggest that people minimize exposure whenever possible.

How frequently do you need to treat for mosquitoes?

That all depends on the season and your location. During winter very few, if any, treatments are needed because mosquitoes aren’t active. However, in areas like Birmingham, AL regular treatments are needed during the spring and summer since the weather conditions are perfect for mosquitoes. It’s also a good idea to continue treatments into the fall, especially if the weather remains warm. Our mosquito control company offers treatment services that keep the insects under control from spring until fall.
