Indoor and Outdoor Flea Control

You gotta feel for the dogs and cats during the summer months. Unless they’re short-haired, the sweltering heat puts their bodies in the very center of a sweatnado. Not only that, flea populations explode in the outdoors and indoors. Poor things. Not only are they in pant-mode, but the itching and scratching can be excruciating.

Fleas love humans too. If you’re a pet parent who lets their best friends sleep on your bed, don’t be stunned if you wake-up with tiny bites from these hoppers.

Take Care of the Inside First

Stands to reason that you want to begin de-fleaing what’s under your roof first. That way you lift the burden from those areas where you have the closest contact with these blood suckers.

Go to the vet before starting any infestation solution. There are prescription-level pills that will protect your pets from both fleas and ticks. Generally works for a month at a time, so it’s a process you need to continue both during the summertime and all-year ’round. After about a couple of days, results begin. At that point, give ’em a nice, soaking bath. Got a cat? May need to don a hazmat suit. Just kidding. Simply remember, cats don’t like water, so it might be worth it to take FiFi to the groomer to do the dangerous job.

Control

You’re ultimately gonna have to use pesticides. However before that, let’s take a trip on the train to cleanliness.

  • Toss the pet bedding, blankets and throw rugs in the washer and crank the temperature up to 11. Spinal Tap fans know what we mean.
  • Take out the vacuum cleaner and suck-up everything. The goal: To bag any eggs, larvae, feces, and to excite the flea pupae to emerge from the cocoon. Expose the unhatched which will make the poison more effective.
  • With that said, vacuum, hit the pet sleeping and resting areas. Likewise give all furniture, cushions and the seams of sofas and chairs a heavy dose of suckage. Don’t forget the carpets.
  • Those who have fleas like crazy, wouldn’t hurt to have the carpets steam-cleaned.

Finally, call Vulcan Termite and Pest Control, Inc. to set-up an appointment for us to go all-science-y on the place.

Outside

Before we come by to deal with the inside, we’re also going to attack the outside. Do us a favor: Mow the lawn, bag leaves and twigs. Also, clear any debris close to the house — woodpiles to be precise. Trim shrubs and trees that touch your home.

By doing that, you’ll ensure that we have an unrestricted view of where we’ll spew the pesticides after we’ve given the interior space a good once-over.

Chill

The process of total elimination will take up-to a month. Have a little patience. The reason for that is we’ll rain death on the living and hopping fleas. Nonetheless, the babies haven’t hatched. We’ll probably pay you another visit in 4-to-5 weeks to make the property totally flea-less.

Another thing to remember, squirrels carry fleas. While there’s nothing we can do about that, by shaving-down the amount of bugs, inadvertently the tree rodents will benefit, too.

And without squirrels, what would the dog get to chase up a tree when you let them sprint across the yard? Fido looks forward to that little game.
