Bug-Free Barbecuing: How to Keep Bugs Away from the Grill
No one wants to be swatting bugs with their spatula over the BBQ grill! For National BBQ Month, we’re providing all you outdoor chefs with ideas and tips on how to keep bugs away while you cook.
Keep a Fan Nearby
The concept is pretty simple. When there’s a good breeze it’s difficult for bugs to fly. Having a fan on in the general vicinity of the grill is an easy way to deter pests like flies and bees while keeping the chef cool at the same time. Just make sure to cover cooked food with tin foil so it doesn’t get too cold.
Surround the Grill with Smells and Sights That Deter Bugs
Sometimes it seems like bugs are attracted to everything, but in actuality that isn’t the case. Herbs in particular have the ability to ward off flies and many other insects because of the oils they produce. Bonus – you can also use herbs to add flavor to your food. Herbs to place around your grill include:
- Lavender
- Bay Leaf
- Basil
- Rosemary
- Mint
Lemon is also a known insect repellant. They can’t stand the citrusy smell. Keep a plate of sliced lemons near the grill to keep bugs at bay, flavor food and add a sour punch to drinks.
Other flavorful additives that deter pests include onions, garlic and chives. Add these to your condiment list to keep the bugs from landing on your food.
Something to try before the grilling begins is wiping down the stands, tables and chairs with undiluted white vinegar. It will keep things clean and the smell is a serious turn off for bugs.
You may also want to avoid using dark plates, cup and décor, as darker colors are thought to attract many types of insects. The color that is the most likely to repel them is a light aqua blue, just be careful to keep it low key because bright colors are also a bug beacon.
Decorate with Marigolds
There are plants that attract bugs, then there are plants that make them run for the hills. Marigolds belong to the latter group. They deter mosquitoes and a host of other garden pests. Use the flower to spruce up the area around your grill and keep bugs away at the same time.
Bonus: Marigolds are edible! You can use the flowers to garnish your culinary creations for an added touch of color.
Preventative Pest Control
Taking preventative steps to keep bugs away is the first line of defensive. Regular pest control treatments will keep ants, bees, wasps, spiders and more from making a home on your property. When it comes time to grill out, they won’t be around to bug you!
Next time you break out the grill during National BBQ Month, keep the tips above in mind to enjoy your food without pests becoming uninvited dinner guests.
