Cockroach Prevention Hacks for Holiday Travelers

The holiday season is just around the corner! Whether you’re going out of town or hosting family gatherings at home, cockroach prevention should be at the top of your list.

Like us, cockroaches are attracted to all the holiday festivities, like big helpings of food, leftover gift wrapping, and a warm kitchen to sneak into.

With the chaos that the holiday season can bring, we know cockroach prevention can get pushed to the back burner. However, it can be easy to manage with a few simple hacks.

Cockroach Prevention Should Be at the Top of Your List

Cockroach prevention should be at the top of your list, and here’s why:

Health and Safety Risks

Cockroaches pose many health and safety risks, such as spreading bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella. Contaminated foods can lead to illnesses that can cause gastrointestinal problems, dehydration, and fever. Severe cases may even require hospitalization. Talk about a quick way to ruin the holiday fun for the whole family!

Have you ever wondered, “Can people be allergic to cockroaches?” In short, the answer is yes; they can trigger allergic reactions in some people. Check out our pest blog to learn more about cockroaches and other pests that can impact your health and home.

When There’s One, There are Many

Cockroaches reproduce very quickly, so when there’s one, there are many! If one gets into your home and finds a reliable food source, you could have an infestation in your hands in a few short weeks.

Prevention is More Cost-Effective

Cockroach prevention is more cost-effective than having a professional pest control team exterminate a full-blown infestation (even when your pest control pros set highly affordable rates on all services, like ours from Vulcan Termite & Pest Control Inc.). Getting rid of cockroaches can be especially draining, time-consuming, and hard on your wallet, with or without a professional’s help.

Cockroaches Love the Holidays Too

Like us, cockroaches love the holidays too. They are attracted to a warm kitchen and don’t mind sticking around for the appetizers you’re serving. Nobody wants to clean up before bed after cooking a holiday feast all day. However, if you wait till the morning, you’ll unfortunately be cleaning up food and cockroach waste, too.

Cockroaches are also attracted to what keeps them hidden. Be careful before you put your hand in an empty gift box; this is a perfect hiding spot!

Holiday Hacks to Keep Cockroaches Out

We have plenty of holiday hacks at Vulcan Termite to keep the cockroaches away this season. Here are a few that are sure to keep your home roach-free:

    1. Proper food storage. Food storage is key to keeping the roaches away. Store leftover food and snacks in airtight containers.
    2. Take out the trash. Run the garbage outside when it gets full or sooner to avoid attracting roaches. If you put anything in the trash that may attract them overnight, it’s best to go ahead and take it out to prevent any unexpected morning visitors, even if the garbage isn’t full yet.
    3. Seal access points and openings. If your doors or windows have cracks or crevices, seal them up using caulk. No gap is too small for a roach to get in through.

If you’ve tried our cockroach prevention hacks but you’re still seeing them scurry around the house, it’s time to get a pest professional involved. We offer household insect pest services to keep your home pest-free this holiday season. Call (205)-663-4200 or contact us online today!
