Insect Superheroes Kids of All Ages Love

Insect Superheroes Kids of All Ages Love

Black Friday is right around the corner, and if you have a kid or comic book lover on your gift list, insects are a good place to start! Superheroes have been around since people first started telling fictional stories. Maybe it’s our reliance on insects and the balance they bring to the ecosystem, but bugs have always been intertwined with superhuman powers.

If you have a gift recipient that’s a fan of insects, look for action figures and comic books that feature these characters.

The Tick

One of the more comical characters in superhero history is The Tick. A total of 158 comic books and two television shows have followed the antics of this unlikely hero! Not much is known about his past, but The Tick is among the few superheroes that are just regular humans in costume fighting crime. No special powers, no huge bank account for fancy gadgets, just a calling to protect his city. However, he is stronger than the average person and can really take a hit.

Black Widow

There have been a number of Black Widow comic book characters in the past, but the most well known today is Natasha Romanova from The Avengers movies. She first showed up in 1964, and famously flipped from Russian spy to American superhero. She’s worked with a ton of big name Marvel characters such as Daredevil, Iron Man and Captain America among many others.

Ant-Man

This summer the brainy hero Ant-Man made his big screen debut. The movie was light and comical, but the human side of Ant-Man, Dr. Henry “Hank” Pym, is rather complex in the Marvel comic books. His partner was kidnapped by aliens, he fell into a complicated love with his partner’s daughter and then he ended up getting schizophrenia. That led to one of Dr. Pym’s other superhero aliases, Yellowjacket. Regardless, the madly brilliant scientist clearly understood the strengths of different insects and that small can still mean powerful.

The Blue Beetle

Like Ant-Man, more than one person has taken on the persona of the Blue Beetle over the years. An alien scarab is the power behind all three Blue Beetle superheroes. The latest human to become the Blue Beetle is the young Jamie Reyes. He figured out that the scarab could transform into an exoskeleton suit that’s full of crazy alien tools.

Spider-Man

Easily the best known of all insect-inspired superheroes, Spider-Man is world famous for his acrobatics and arachnid capabilities. Jumping from the comic book to the screen, Spider-man is the biggest superhero movie franchise ever with $3.96 billion in ticket sales. Peter Parker, as he’s known during his day job, has teamed up with plenty of other big name superheroes in his long career fighting evil geniuses. A little known fact is that Parker had a genetic edge – both of his parents were spies working with S.H.I.E.L.D.

The Wasp

Janet van Dyne, a.k.a. The Wasp, got a little help from Ant-Man to transform into her superhero alter ego. Dyne is able to shrink like Ant-Man, but she can also grow wings and shoot out stinging power waves. Together they defeated the evil aliens that killed Dyne’s father. The partnership worked out so well they worked together to defeat several other archenemies. The Wasp even became a founding member of the original Avengers and was the one that coined the team name.

Of Course There Are Also Insect Anti-Heroes

Just like in the real world, there are some unlikable insect characters. Over the years there have been dozens of anti-heroes, enemies, villains and just plain bad guys take on the identity of an insect. Some of the better known include:

  • The Monarch
  • Firefly
  • Zorak
  • Insect Queen
  • Bug-eyed Bandit
