The Coolest, Creepiest, Crawliest Costumes & Candy for Halloween

kids

Need a few creative ideas for your kid’s classroom? Hosting a Halloween party this year? Like many of you, Vulcan Termite and Pest Control Inc. loves using the pests we catch as inspiration during the spookiest holiday of the year. We’ve compiled a list below of our favorite bugged out costumes, candies and treats we’ll be enjoying at the end of the month. If you have a few ideas of your own, we’d love to hear them!

Creepy, Crawly Costumes

Spiderman and ladybugs are two of the most popular insect-related Halloween costumes, but if you’ve already done that in the past, try one of these costumes on for size. They are easy and affordable!

Ants in Your Pants

Looking for a creative last minute costume? For this one all you need is a pair of shorts and a black marker. Starting at your foot or ankle (depending on what type of shoes you’re wearing) draw ant bodies that are lined in a row going up the leg. Stop the ant trail just above the shorts line. That’s it – now start squirming!

Alternative: If you don’t want to draw on your legs you can glue plastic bugs to flesh-colored nylon stocking to create an even more realistic effect.

Cardboard Bug

If you’ve moved recently or bought a new appliance, you can repurpose your cardboard boxes into an insect costume. Really the possibilities are endless, however, one of our favorites from Cardboard Collective is the lightning bug costume. They have some amazing costumes, but this one is very easy to make using cardboard, watercolor paints and glue.

Craft Paper Snail

They may wreak havoc in the garden, but this simple snail costume will definitely get a better reception. All you need is tan craft paper for the shell, a small square of cardboard, ribbon and a glue gun. Crunch up the craft paper then roll it starting at one corner. Once you have a lengthy roll, tuck up one end and begin wrapping it like a cinnamon roll, taping as you go to help hold the shape. Connect both ends of the ribbon to the cardboard to create backpack-like straps. Finally attach the cardboard to the shell. For an added touch, use a headband, Styrofoam balls and a little of the craft paper to make antenna.

Insect Inspired Treats for the Halloween Holiday

Now that you’ve got a few costume options, it’s time to get the treats together. The Halloween snacks below will actually make people hungry instead of horrified.

Worms in Dirt

This treat is as interesting to look at as it is to eat. You can put the worms in dirt mixture into individual cups or make one large batch. Start with a base of chocolate pudding at the bottom. Crush up chocolate wafer cookies or Oreo cookies to create a layer of dirt that goes over the pudding. Finally, add gummy worms to the top and stick a few down in the “dirt.”

Ladybugs on Baguettes

For a more adult party appetizer, try a tray of ladybugs on baguettes. Cherry tomatoes cut in half and whole black olives provide the body parts that sit on top of cream cheese covered slices of baguette bread. For a pop of leafy green, add a few pieces of basil.

Bugs in a Blanket

Everyone loves pigs in a blanket, but what about bugs in a blanket? For this Halloween treat, you can create your own pigs in a blanket with breadstick dough and mini sausages, or use a ready-made option. After cooking, stick shoestring potatoes into the roll for legs and two in one end of the sausage for antennas. Add mustard dollops for the eyes and you’re done!

Making bug-inspired treats in the kitchen is a fun way to get ready for the holiday, but real insects are a whole other story.
