Winter Is Coming. These Pests Could Be Too.

pests

We are sorry to be the bearers of bad news and inform you that even when the warm weather fades into cold and dark days, pests still make appearances in and around your home. While they may not be flying around outside, they certainly are invading your home by making it their home, too.

Many pests search for a place to stay warm in the cold outdoor temperatures. So, if you want to protect your home from these unwanted guests, keep your eye out for these 15 creepy critters:

#1: Termites

Although little, termites are incredibly destructive. They swarm, socialize, and reproduce until February, and often find spots within woodpiles, leaves, and more. To ensure that these critters won’t destroy your home from the inside out, keep your yard waste to a minimum keeping everything clean and organized. Even the smallest point of entry can lead to an infestation.

#2: Rats & Mice

When it comes to living outside, even rats and mice prefer to be burrowed in the warmth of a home—including your home! Both of these rodents can gnaw at anything, slip through the cracks the size of a dime or a half an inch, and carry diseases.

#3: Ants

Looking for food? Ants can sneak into your home by crawling through the littlest of cracks and holes. Ants are colony insects, meaning they like to stick together. So if you see one, there are probably many more hiding somewhere in your home.

#4: Beetles, Ladybugs, and Stink Bugs

Thankfully, beetles, ladybugs, and stink bugs aren’t harmful and don’t cause damage, but they are a nuisance. At any point, these will sneak into your home through windows, vents, cracks, chimneys, and more. They truly won’t hurt you, rather they only want to stay warm during the winter. Keep your eye out for them.

#5: Cockroaches

Everyone knows them, and everyone hates them. Cockroaches can’t live in temperatures lower than 15 degrees Fahrenheit, hence why they invade your home during the winter months. Their goal is to stay warm, so they often head to your crawl spaces, basements, and other dark areas to stay warm.

#6: Spiders

House spiders tend to invade your home during any and every season, but during the winter season, more dangerous spiders seek the comfort of your home to stay warm. There is less of a risk that these spiders will bite you because they like to burrow in low-traffic areas, but they are still there. Bottom line: look for brown recluse and black widow spiders in your basements, boxes, and window moldings.

And More!

The list goes on, but to name a few:

  • Stink Bugs
  • Box Elders
  • Silverfish
  • Ticks
  • Aphids
