How to Keep Pests Out of Your HVAC

Your HVAC system is a key piece of equipment that keeps everyone in your home comfortable – including pests. In the past we’ve discussed how warm homes attract insects in the winter, and it’s not unheard of for them to go right to the heat source. Just like your electronics, pest can also do serious damage to an HVAC system. That’s why it’s important to take preventative measures and handle any issues as soon as they occur.

If you’ve already got an insect problem in your HVAC system it’s time to call a professional pest exterminator. For everyone else, there are many steps you can take to prevent an infestation in your heating and cooling systems.

 Use Screens

The air vents on the exterior of the home give insects easy access into your HVAC system. One of the easiest ways to keep them outside where they belong is with mesh screens. Look for aluminum wire mesh that can be fitted over the entire vent.

 Keep Things Clean

It’s almost impossible to keep every insect out of your HVAC system. They have a knack for finding their way inside, and the result can be lower air quality. Do regular maintenance on your HVAC system to keep all the components clean and keep an eye on infestations. One area to focus on is the air filters, which should be changed or cleaned at least every 1-2 months.

 Seal Up the Ducts

One of the main entry points for insects is the ductwork. Even the tiniest crack or a loose seal gives them an opportunity to infest the HVAC system. Taking the time to properly seal your ductwork will not only keep bugs out, but it will also help lower your utility bills.

Sealing up cracks in the ducts is relatively affordable and easy (where they are accessible). You’ll need foil tape for small cracks and mastic sealant for larger holes. Energy Star has a great brochure that covers all the basics of maintaining your ducts or hiring a pro do to the work for you.

Clear Out Around the Outdoor Unit

The outdoor unit for the HVAC system should be on a slab and clear of any vegetation on all sides. If grass, weeds, or bushes have grown up around the unit, cut them back.

 Regular Pest Control Treatments

The best way to keep bugs out of your HVAC system and the rest of your home is by getting regular pest control treatments. We recommend that homeowners get quarterly or monthly pest treatments to avoid a serious infestation. Quarterly treatments will keep you covered throughout every season to stop insects whether they are trying to warm up or cool off.
